Chairwoman of Hoboken Housing Authority
Crystal Fonseca and Jennie Pu are the Democrats for New Jersey Assembly who will fight for higher wages, lower costs of living, much-needed tax relief, and protect your rights and freedoms against extremists in Washington.
Crystal Fonseca and Jennie Pu are proudly endorsed by the Hudson County Democratic Organization, Senator Raj Mukherji, Commissioner Anthony Romano, New Jersey National Organization for Women, the Laborers’ International Union of North America Hoboken Councilwoman Tiffanie Fisher, and the Chairwoman of Hoboken Housing Authority, Barbara Reyes.
Jennie Pu is Director of the Hoboken Public Library and a longtime parent volunteer and PTA leader, advocating for public schools and delivering programming and services to children and residents. She previously served as a school librarian within the Jersey City Public Schools, which her children attend, and Dean of Libraries for Hudson County Community College. Jennie was the first Hudson County librarian to be named the New Jersey Library Association’s Librarian of the Year (2024). She won the Jersey City Public Schools Parent Leadership Award and was named a Jersey City Woman of Action. She was recognized for her “tenacious and fearless efforts to support intellectual freedom and the right to read” and a “force of nature” by state and national library leaders.
Jennie is a twenty-year resident of Jersey City and a former trustee of the Hamilton Park Neighborhood Association. Jennie is ready to put her knowledge, fortitude and leadership in the State Legislature to continue to fight for the residents of our district.
Crystal Fonseca has spent her entire career fighting to make Jersey City a better place for working families. Currently serving as a Division Director at the Department of Public Works, she’s committed her career to public service by delivering essential services that improve residents’ quality of life – because she knows firsthand how much good government matters.
Crystal was raised by her grandparents, who also adopted four foster children. At age 19, when her grandmother passed away, she took on the responsibility of helping raise the girls alongside her grandfather to ensure they had the best path to success possible. Her Puerto Rican and Cuban roots instilled in her the drive to push forward, even when the odds were stacked against her. Balancing school, work, and family responsibilities, she earned her bachelor’s degree from St. Peter’s University and is on a continuous path to complete her masters degree.
Crystal is no stranger to public service—or to taking on tough fights. She previously served as Vice Chair to the largest school district in NJ. She knows what it’s like to navigate an unfair economy, an underfunded education system, and a healthcare system that leaves too many behind. That’s why she’s running—to bring the fight for economic justice, quality education, and healthcare for all to the State Legislature.
In 2019, she received the Jersey City Public Schools Parent Leadership Award for her efforts, and in 2020, Jennie was named a Jersey City Woman of Action by Councilman James Solomon for her advocacy in support of public school funding and parent education. A resident of Jersey City for the past two decades, she is a former trustee of the Hamilton Park Neighborhood Association. Jennie is committed to continuing her long history of advocating for Hudson County residents by securing a fairer school funding formula to minimize the local property tax burden on Hoboken and Jersey City residents, improve public safety, and fund and secure the reliable, quality mass transit service that she uses regularly and that Hudson County residents deserve.
Because of her hard work and unrelenting commitment to community, Pu was praised by NJ Library Association Executive Director Brett Bonfield as a “role model for other libraries and directors” and for her “tenacious and fearless efforts to support intellectual freedom and the right to read.” Skip Auld, the CEO of a county public library in Maryland, called her a “force of nature” and Hoboken Mayor Ravinder S. Bhalla previously noted, “Jennie Pu’s leadership has been instrumental in making our public library a beacon of knowledge and a sanctuary for diverse voices.”
Crystal Fonseca has dedicated 20 years in municipal public service to Jersey City, where she presently serves as the Division Director of Buildings and Street Maintenance. A tireless public works professional, she has also served as Personnel Manager at the City of Jersey City Department of Public Safety. In addition to overseeing daily operations to ensure quality-of-life services for Jersey City residents in her leadership role at DPW, she served for three years as a member of the Newark Board of Education – rising to serve as Vice Chair of the state’s largest school system – prior to permanently settling in Jersey City several years ago. Part of a large Puerto Rican family raised by her grandparents, Crystal had to juggle college with the responsibilities of de facto parenthood at the age of 19 following the death of her grandmother who had adopted four girls who had been in the foster system since birth. After their loss, Crystal took on the responsibility of helping her grandfather raise her four younger stepsisters who have in adulthood embraced the same commitment to public service as Crystal. Her early economic and personal struggles, along with her professional experience, shape Crystal’s commitment to a fair economy, quality urban education, and quality, accessible healthcare. As an elected Hudson County Democratic Committeewoman, Crystal is horrified by the Trump Administration’s fulfillment of its most harmful promises.
Stabilize property taxes and fight skyrocketing rents by securing fair school funding, promoting municipal consolidation and shared services, and championing strong pro-tenant laws.
Jennie and Crystal are committed to ensuring that every resident of New Jersey has access to safe and affordable housing. In the State Assembly, they will advocate for enhanced tenant protections, boost investments in affordable housing, and tackle the growing cost of living.
Push for affordable, quality healthcare for all—including a true NJ public option. Unwaveringly protect every woman’s right to bodily autonomy and ensure access to safe, comprehensive reproductive healthcare.
Protect Liberty State Park and Caven Point from commercialization and privatization—keeping our green spaces open, free, and accessible to all.
Invest in everyday people, champion our labor unions, and support Hudson County’s small businesses.
Transform mass transit by investing in dedicated, permanent funding sources for NJ TRANSIT, enact the NJ TRANSIT Customer Advocate legislation, and hold Port Authority accountable for long-promised PATH improvements. Simultaneously, work on improving traffic congestion and supporting the County’s Vision Zero initiative.
Stand up to Trump’s extremist agenda—protect our democracy, fight climate change, support our immigrant neighbors, and safeguard human rights (including LGBTQ+ rights).
Crystal and Jennie will support our first responders, get the resources needed to address the mental health crisis, and make sure our neighborhoods and parks are safe and clean.
